Run ads on ChatGPT. Be one of the first.

ChatGPT Ads have been live in Australia since April 17, 2026, but only for a select group of advertisers, mostly bought through agencies, and the format is still reach-led. We ship your campaign through our managed-buyer pathway — senior-led and live now, while access is still rationed.

Live for select advertisers

Ads are running in Australia for a limited set of (largely agency-managed) advertisers. Self-serve access is widening but still restricted; measurement stays aggregate-only.

What we know. What we don’t.

Reach + CPM objective

Brand-awareness style buys at the bottom of ChatGPT answers, clearly labelled sponsored.

Country + context targeting

Country-level geo plus plain-language "context hints" based on conversation topics.

High-intent placement

Ads tend to trigger on "best", "buy" and "what should I get" prompts, usually on the first response.

Free + Go tier inventory

Logged-in adult users only. Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise/Edu users see zero ads.

Lower minimums

AU minimum reportedly ~$50k (down from $200k+ at US launch); CPMs around $15-40.

Managed + agency access

Major holdcos are already buying, Omnicom alone has placed 30+ clients. We buy on the same managed pathway.

No conversation data

Advertisers receive aggregated impressions and clicks only. No chat content.

No demographic targeting

Country and context hints only. No age, gender, interest, behavioural.

Sensitive topic exclusions

Ads cannot appear near health, mental health, politics or other regulated topics.

Under-18 exclusion

OpenAI predicts and excludes accounts believed to be under 18.

Plus/Pro/Enterprise excluded

Paid-tier audiences are completely ad-free and will stay that way.

Restricted categories

Some verticals (firearms, gambling, others) excluded from the pilot.

Clicks + conversions objective

Reach/CPM only today. Clicks and conversions are listed "coming soon" with no firm date.

Conversion tracking

No pixel, no post-view attribution. Cookieless by design, you rely on OpenAI's aggregate reporting.

Self-serve at scale in AU

Access is opening up but still limited; managed buys remain the reliable route in.

Audience export / segments

No retargeting, no custom audiences, no lookalikes.

Documented creative specs

Headline and description character limits not yet publicly documented.

Brand-safety integrations

No announced third-party measurement / verification partners in AU yet.

Not every brand should be early.

Brand-led ecommerce

Pilot now

High-intent discovery audience. Brand-awareness KPIs fit Reach/CPM objective perfectly.

Considered B2B SaaS

Pilot now

ChatGPT skews to research-led, decision-stage buyers. Strong match for category-defining brands.

Direct-response performance

Wait 90 days

No pixel, no conversion tracking yet, and clicks/conversions objectives are still “coming soon”. Wait until measurement matures before scaling DR budget.

Local services / single suburb

Skip for now

No suburb-level targeting. Country-only geo means too much wasted reach.

Regulated verticals

Skip for now

Health, mental health, politics, gambling, firearms etc. excluded from the pilot entirely.

Pure DTC convenience retail

Wait 90 days

Repeat-purchase categories see less lift in research-led environments. Pilot when clicks/conversions objectives ship.

From brief to live campaign.

01

Eligibility & fit

We screen your category, market, and budget against the current pilot rules. If you fit, we set expectations. If you do not, we tell you so and what would need to change.

02

Creative & campaign brief

We write the prompts, sponsored copy and creative spec to OpenAI standards. The format is conversational, not display – we treat it accordingly.

03

Inventory access

We hold a managed-buyer relationship with the OpenAI ads team. We secure inventory on your behalf – faster than waiting for self-serve to fully open in AU.

04

Measurement + optimise

Reach and brand-lift KPIs, plus your own landing-page analytics, since there is no pixel yet. Weekly reporting. We layer in clicks and conversions objectives the moment OpenAI ships them.

The first-mover window narrows weekly.

Self-serve is widening. Inventory is growing. Every week, more Australian brands realise the channel exists. Run a managed campaign and own category-level share-of-voice before competitors arrive.

Questions, answered straight.

They are live. OpenAI confirmed the AU/NZ/Canada pilot on March 27, 2026, with ads actually appearing from April 17, 2026. The misconception comes from the fact that self-serve access in Australia is still invite-only beta – most businesses cannot directly sign up through OpenAI’s interface yet. That is exactly where an agency-managed buyer like Paperstack helps.
A clearly labelled sponsored unit at the bottom of relevant answers, visually separated from the AI response itself. OpenAI has been deliberate about not letting ads influence the answer the AI gives. Format is conversational and contextual, not banner-style display.
Current CPMs in AU run roughly $15-$40 (down from $60 at US launch). Australian minimum spend is reportedly $50k for managed campaigns. Smaller pilots may be possible through agency-managed buys; we will give you a realistic answer based on your category once we see your brief.
Country-level geo (Australia) plus plain-language “context hints” – i.e. you tell OpenAI the kinds of conversations your ad makes sense in. There is no demographic, behavioural, interest or audience targeting yet. Targeting will mature; if your strategy depends on that maturity, you may want to wait 90 days.
AEO and GEO are about organic visibility – getting your brand cited inside ChatGPT’s actual answers. ChatGPT Ads is a paid surface that sits beside those answers, clearly labelled. They are complementary: a well-run AEO program plus a ChatGPT Ads pilot is the most complete coverage you can run in AI search today.
Yes, with caveats. Conversions API and pixel-based measurement rolled out in Australia on May 22, 2026. Current pixel measures last-click only – view-through and longer attribution windows are on the roadmap. CPA bidding is listed as ‘coming soon’ with no firm date.
If you can get into the self-serve beta and you have an in-house paid-media team comfortable with new platforms, by all means go direct. Most Australian brands cannot get in directly today, and most do not have a team with managed-ChatGPT-ads experience. We have run pilots in the US since February 2026 and we hold a managed-buyer relationship with the OpenAI ads team.
