Moving in from SEO? Here is what changes.

If you write good SEO content, you are most of the way to good GEO content. The shift is one of unit (passage, not page) and craft (specific citation patterns, not just keyword targeting).

Engines still need to believe you know the subject. Topical maps, clustered content, expert authors. All still essential.

Clear structure

If you publish original data, you become the cite-able source for every prompt that touches your data. The most durable GEO move there is.

Word-count-driven content

3,000 words is no longer "more authoritative". Engines pull 200-word passages. Dense, focused, cited passages beat long catch-all pages.

Hedged language for "balance"

Hedging hurts. Write with authoritative tone where you have authority. Save the hedging for genuinely uncertain claims.

Listicle SEO patterns

Listicles work for Google because they scan well. Engines prefer prose passages with embedded citations. Rewrite list-form pages with named, cited prose under each item.

Keyword-density thinking

Engines pick passages by meaning, not term frequency. Write naturally. Optimise for the prompt and the claim, not the keyword.

Position-adjusted visibility

A metric from the GEO paper that weighs both whether a passage is included AND where it sits in the generated answer.

Fluency

A property the LLM scores per passage. Roughly: how naturally the prose reads. Higher fluency = higher selection rate.

RAG

Retrieval-Augmented Generation. The standard architecture answer engines use: retrieve sources, then generate using them.

Source attribution

When an engine quotes a passage and credits the source. The GEO equivalent of getting a link clicked.

The risk is different: over-citing, over-quoting, or stuffing irrelevant statistics makes prose less readable for humans, which hurts conversion.
