The Gold Coast SEO playbook (2026 edition)

How we rank local service businesses on the Coast. Map pack, reviews, GBP categories, the lot.
· 11 min read

We have run local SEO on the Gold Coast for years. Plumbers, dentists, real estate agents, car detailers, mortgage brokers, pet groomers, tilers, electricians, accountants. Different industries, same map. Same competitive dynamics. Same patterns of what works and what does not.

Here is the playbook we use, updated for what is actually working in 2026.

Treat the Coast as five markets, not one

A search for “Gold Coast plumber” is mostly noise. The buying searches are “Burleigh plumber”, “Robina plumber”, “Coomera plumber”, and so on. We carve the Coast into roughly five clusters. Northern (Coomera, Pimpama, Helensvale). Central (Surfers, Broadbeach, Mermaid). Southern (Burleigh, Palm Beach, Currumbin, Tugun). Western (Robina, Varsity, Mudgeeraba). Hinterland (Tamborine, Canungra, Beechmont).

A real local SEO program ranks in the suburb level pack for each cluster you actually service. The “Gold Coast” head term is a vanity win.

Google Business Profile is 60% of the work

Most local businesses have a GBP that is half done. Categories wrong. Photos thin. Services list empty. Hours not set. Booking link missing. Q&A neglected. Posts dormant.

Fixing this is the highest leverage local SEO work in 2026. Order of priority:

  • Primary category exactly right. Get this wrong and nothing else matters.
  • Up to 9 secondary categories used.
  • 20 plus photos, refreshed monthly. Real photos, not stock.
  • Services list populated with the actual services you sell, not just the category.
  • Booking or quote link installed.
  • Q&A pre populated with the real questions customers ask.
  • Weekly Posts. Even if no one reads them. Google reads them.

Reviews are not optional

On the Coast in 2026, the median Google rating in most categories is 4.7. If you are below that, you are losing the click before the searcher even reads your name.

A working review program looks like this. Every completed job triggers a review request inside 24 hours. The request goes via SMS not email, because SMS gets a 5 to 10x response rate. The link sends to your GBP, not to a gating page. Negative reviews get a response within 24 hours, written by a person.

Review velocity matters more than review count past about 50 reviews. A business adding 4 reviews a month outranks a business with 400 reviews and nothing in the last year.

Suburb pages, but only if you actually work there

For 8 years, the standard local SEO trick was to publish 30 thin suburb pages and call it a day. Google has been progressively cleaning this up. The pages that still rank in 2026 are the ones with real, suburb specific content. Photos of jobs you have actually done in that suburb. Reviews from clients in that suburb. Honest content about local conditions (the soil in Tallebudgera vs the soil in Coomera matters if you are a landscaper, and Google can tell you wrote about both).

Our rule is simple. If you cannot truthfully fill a 600 word page about your work in that suburb, do not build the page.

Paid search supports, it does not replace

For local service businesses on the Coast, we usually run a small amount of paid alongside the organic work. Local Services Ads if eligible. A few job type focused Search campaigns. Geo fenced to the actual service area. Call tracked. The paid work backfills the suburbs and job types that organic has not climbed yet.

Spending heavily on paid before the organic foundation is in place is how local businesses end up paying $40 a click for jobs that should have been free.

What is different in 2026

A few new wrinkles since the last time we wrote this.

  • AI Overviews now appear on roughly 25% of local service queries. The good news is the local pack still sits above them.
  • Reviews are starting to be cited inside ChatGPT and Perplexity local results. Review content is now answer engine content.
  • Google is much better at detecting fake reviews. We have seen multiple competitors lose 20+ reviews in a single sweep. Do not buy them.
  • The local pack is testing more aggressive booking integrations. Make sure your booking link is real and works on mobile, today.

The fundamentals have not changed in five years. Get the GBP right. Get reviews coming in. Build pages where you do real work. Do not cheat. The Coast pays back honest local SEO better than most cities, because the customer base is dense, mobile, and reads reviews.
