Authority
earned, not bought.

Off-page SEO is the work of building authority outside your own site, the editorial mentions, the digital PR placements, the niche partnerships, the citations that compound over years. It’s the part of SEO most agencies either ignore or do badly. Done well, it’s a moat.

Links are still the strongest external ranking signal in SEO.

Google has spent twenty-five years trying to teach its algorithm to read the web the way a librarian does. Authoritative sources matter. Editorial mentions matter. Who’s citing you, and in what context, matters. That hasn’t changed, and the rise of AI search has reinforced it. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude all weight source authority heavily when deciding what to surface in an answer.

Off-page SEO is the discipline of building that authority deliberately. Not link-buying. Not directory spam. Real placements in publications your customers and Google both trust, partnerships with category-adjacent businesses, and the unsexy work of cleaning up the citations you already have so they actually count.

It’s also the highest-risk part of SEO if you get it wrong. Bad links don’t just fail to help, they actively hurt. Most Australian businesses with manual penalties got there because someone, somewhere, paid for the wrong kind of link. We unwind that work as often as we build new authority.

This page is a primer. Read it, run the self-audit below, and if you’d like a senior to review your backlink profile, we’ll do it free.

Four pillars of technical SEO.

01

Editorial Links

Genuine placements in publications your industry reads. Earned through commentary, original data, expert contribution and journalist relationships, not bought through a link broker. Slower to build, impossible to outrank with cheaper alternatives.

02

Digital PR

Campaigns built to earn coverage. Original research, surveys, data stories, expert positioning. The kind of work that gets picked up by tier-one publications and naturally attracts links across the long tail. Compounds because every campaign builds on the last.

03

Local Citations

For service businesses, your name, address and phone number need to match across the web. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, niche directories. Most businesses have drifted across at least one. We audit and reconcile.

04

Cleanup & Risk

Toxic backlinks are the silent killer of rankings. Old SEO work from former agencies, paid placements that turned spammy, hacked sites linking to you. We audit the profile, disavow what needs to go, and protect what’s worth keeping.

Common questions.

Yes, and more than ever for competitive queries. Google’s own search engineers have confirmed links remain one of the top three ranking signals. AI search is even more authority-led, ChatGPT and Perplexity disproportionately cite sites with strong editorial backlink profiles. The discipline matters; the tactics just keep evolving.

Bad link building is. Good link building is the safest investment in long-term SEO. The difference is editorial intent, are you earning coverage by being interesting and useful, or are you paying to appear in places that exist only to host paid links? We only do the first.

It depends on your category and current authority, but for most Australian SMBs, 4 to 8 high-quality editorial links per quarter is a strong baseline. Enterprise programmes can sustain 15 to 30 per quarter. Anyone promising 100+ a month is selling you something dangerous.

Three layers. (1) Domain-level authority metrics (Ahrefs DR, Majestic Trust Flow, but mainly directionally). (2) Branded search volume, real authority shows up as more people searching for your brand by name. (3) Ranking lift on the commercial queries that matter, with off-page as one of several inputs.

The opposite. AI search engines need to decide which sources to trust before they cite anything, and the strongest trust signal they have is the same one Google’s used for two decades, who else cites this site, in what context, from where. Off-page SEO is becoming more important, not less.
